As some of you may or may not know, my old Army National Guard unit, Hartford’s 143d MP Company, has been in Baghdad for some time now. Being Military Police, that’s obviously the function they’re performing, working with the Iraqi Police.
I recently learned that one of my old platoon leaders, now the company commander, was injured while on a patrol. Apparently, a bomb, hidden in a storm drain, was detonated as his humvee drove over it. He was hit by shrapnel in the left elbow.
He’s a good soldier and a good person. I very much admired and respected him.
Anyway, I justed wanted to wish him well….let’s hope for a speedy recovery.

CONNECTICUT ARMY NATIONAL GUARD SOLDIER INJURED IN IRAQ
NATIONAL GUARD ARMORY, Hartford, Conn.
A Connecticut Army National Guard soldier from the 143d Military Police Company of Hartford, Conn., was injured in Baghdad, Iraq, yesterday.
Capt. Gregory Samuels, 35, Hartford, Conn., was injured while in a vehicle on patrol in Baghdad when an explosive device struck his vehicle.
Samuels sustained shrapnel to his left arm and was medically evacuated (MEDAVAC) to a Combat Support Hospital in Iraq. The incident occurred Tuesday evening, September 9, 2003, at 10:45 p.m. local time. Samuels serves as the commander of the 143d Military Police Company. The unit is currently stationed in Baghdad conducting security operations. The mission includes conducting patrols and the training and mentoring of the newly formed Iraqi Police Force (IPF).
The 143d Military Company departed Connecticut on February 12, 2003, and moved to Ft. Drum, NY, where the unit underwent additional training and certification for deployment overseas. The unit arrived in Kuwait in April 2003 and moved north to conduct operations in Iraq. The unit has been operating in the Baghdad area since early May.
The Connecticut National Guard has more than 1,200 soldiers and airmen serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Noble Eagle.
This year the Connecticut National Guard has deployed nearly 1,000 members to Southwest Asia.
